The Future Is Flying for MRO — Rob Griffiths, Pratt & Whitney

By Rob Griffiths, senior vice president, Commercial Engines Operations, Pratt & Whitney

As Le Journal de L’Aviation’s MRO newsletter celebrates its 10-year anniversary, it’s fitting that this milestone coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine’s entry into service. The last decade in aviation has, to a large extent, been shaped by transformative engine technologies such as the GTF, powering thousands of new generation single-aisle aircraft around the world. With that growth, the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) industry faces demand like never before.

More aircraft in service means more engines coming through shops, more parts moving through supply chains and more effort to get each engine back into operation on time. Airlines around the world are investing in expanding their fleets to meet growing passenger demand, which means an increased need for maintenance capacity, advanced tooling and highly skilled technicians. Engine MRO has always been essential, but today it stands as a crucial enabler of growth across commercial aviation.

A central pillar to meeting demand is increasing MRO output, which for GTF engines has already increased more than 300% since 2019. Pratt & Whitney has expanded the GTF MRO network to 21 shops globally, with more on the way, reflecting our long-term commitment to keep customers flying. Eight shops operate in Europe, providing one third of global MRO capacity for GTF. The GTF MRO network is structured to enable cooperation among the leading MRO providers, sharing best practices and deploying new technologies and solutions to increase shop performance, reduce turnaround times, and support our customers.

Advances in maintenance technology continue to drive significant progress. AI-powered borescope inspections are assisting technicians to identify damage conditions on hardware and improving consistency in data capture and reporting. Enhanced modeling tools enable more accurate predictability and scheduling.   Each of these tools helps accelerate shop visits, improve reliability and enhance planning for operators worldwide.

In addition to deploying new technologies, Pratt & Whitney continues to invest in our MRO facilities. In February, we opened a $70 million, 81,000-square-foot GTF MRO expansion at our Columbus Engine Center in Georgia. The facility’s annual capacity increased by more than 25%, adding critical overhaul volume to the GTF MRO network in support of the growing fleet. In April, we announced a $100 million investment across three MRO sites in Texas, Florida and Arkansas to expand facilities, add new equipment and enhance speed and efficiency. Later this year, the first GTF engines will be inducted at Christchurch Engine Centre in New Zealand and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) in Japan.

The past decade has shown the necessity for close alignment between innovation in propulsion and innovation in maintenance. The GTF engine delivered a step change in fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and noise, and it has also generated a trove of operating data – more than 50 million flight hours – which we are leveraging to continually improve the engine’s performance and time and on wing.

This includes informing our development of the GTF Advantage engine, which offers up to double the time on wing and increased takeoff thrust compared to the current model, especially useful in high-altitude and high-temperature operating environments. While the GTF Advantage will become the new production standard for the A320neo family aircraft, our Hot Section Plus (HS+) upgrade option will enable current operators to realize up to 95% of the GTF Advantage’s durability benefits. Our GTF MRO network will play a vital role in introducing HS+ and other upgrades into the fleet, which will take place during regular shop visits beginning in 2027.

The potential of new technologies to improve engine performance and MRO turn times should not lead us to overlook the importance of nurturing a skilled industry workforce. The demand for skilled technicians, engineers and analysts grows as fleets expand. Building the next-generation workforce requires investment in training, apprenticeships and career pathways that attract talent into aviation. Developing these skills is critical not only for meeting today’s needs but for sustaining the industry’s momentum in the decades to come.

Reflecting on the resilience and growth of aviation and MRO demand over the last decade, it’s clear we are entering a new era of opportunity. With continued innovation, expanded maintenance capability and a strong, skilled workforce, our industry will continue to fly towards a bright future.
