The first year of future ALAT mechanics training on its "BAC pro aero" programme at the French army's Technical training centre in Bourges started back at school in September. The 21 students will follow a three-year programme which will combine academic, technical and military training to teach them aviation maintenance skills and enable them to enlist as non-commissioned officers when their training is complete.

The army's stated objective is to "win over and create loyalty with rare resources", as one senior office confirmed to us in June: "We know that human resources are our Achilles heel. This new system will enable us to "capture" young people before they finish high school, give them a trade and get them interested in a military career".

The special "aviation" training has been set up jointly between civilian and military structures. It is managed by the Autun military high school and the academic side is supervised by the GRETA Berry organisation (Bourges academy). A "systems" stream is due to be created by September 2019.

While this first training session is hosting 21 students, the objective is to double or even triple numbers from September 2019, rising to 60 students later. Plans are to transfer the training to Dax around 2022.
