ANA uses the cabins of its passenger aircraft to carry emergency medical supplies

All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced it is the first Japanese airline to carry medical supplies on its passenger seats and overhead compartments, increasing the cargo capacity of its passenger aircraft. For a Boeing 787-9 (picture), the total cargo capacity is increased by approximately 40%.

ANA explained that due to the expansion of entry restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, passenger flights have been largely suspended or reduced worldwide, resulting in limited space for air cargo.

To meet the increased demand for transportation of vital medical supplies, the Japanese airline began transporting masks and other items using the passenger hand luggage compartment above the seats beetween Shanghai and Tokyo/Haneda since April 10th. But since April 22, ANA also begun using its passenger seats as cargo space on this route.

"ANA is honored to help relief efforts in Japan and help deliver these vital medical supplies," said Toshiaki Toyama, President of ANA cargo and Executive Vice President of ANA. "We are excited to use ANA Group's resources in a creative way to deliver goods to people in need" he added.
