Work on new Mexico airport to begin Monday: president

Mexico's president announced Wednesday that construction would begin next week on a controversial new airport, an announcement tempered by his communications minister who said it would be only a symbolic start.

Months after canceling work on another airport that was already one-third complete, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in a speech at the site of a replacement project that construction would begin Monday.

The new development will replace a part-completed $13 billion project championed by his predecessor, Enrique Pena Nieto, which Lopez Obrador axed after holding a referendum on the issue that was marred by irregularities.

Lopez Obrador, who ran on a pro-austerity, anti-graft platform, had criticized the partially completed airport as an unnecessary mega-project marred by corruption.

Scrapping the project angered investors and the government had to pay $5.2 billion back to bondholders.

Still, it is unclear exactly what will begin Monday after Secretary of Communications Javier Jimenez Espriu said later Wednesday it was only a masterplan that would be unveiled at the Santa Lucia airbase.

"We will explain how the airport's masterplan is being developed and symbolically place the first stone," he said, without giving a precise start date.

The new facility will operate in parallel to the aging Benito Juarez airport in the east of the Mexican capital, as well as an upgraded terminus in the neighboring city of Toluca.

"This airbase has about 3,000 hectares (7,500 acres), the current airport in Mexico City is 600 hectares. We are talking about five times the surface of the current airport in Mexico City," said Lopez Obrador, known by his initials AMLO.

Hours earlier, in his usual morning press conference, the president said the government would save 100 billion pesos compared to the cost of the canceled airport.

AMLO said the airport plans would "solve the problem of saturation of the current airport in three years, and not six, as originally contemplated."

Mexico City's current airport has an official capacity of 32 million passengers per year, but handled 44 million passengers last year.

ATR has created a new independent Operations Directorate within its Executive Committee, which was previously only a department integrated into the Programs and Customer Services Directorate. Reporting directly to the CEO Stefano Bortoli, it will be headed by RAPHAEL DUBUS, previously Accountable Manager of Production Organisation. He will take office on September 1 and join the Executive Committee.

S7 TECHNICS has started to manufacture plastic products using vacuum thermoforming. The new method will allow the Russian MRO company to considerably expand the range of items it is able to produce for aircraft interiors. The first parts produced were plastic passenger seat backs that are being installed on S7 Airlines' Airbus A320 family of aircraft.

AAR has won a four-year maintenance contract with the ROYAL NETHERLANDS AIR FORCE (RNLAF) to perform maintenance, repair and overhaul of the CH-47 Chinook APU for Logistics Centre Woensdrecht (LCW). The US MRO company has been present on the RNLAF F-16 fleet for more than 25 years. AAR will provide this new contract from its Component Repair facility in Amsterdam.

SAFRAN HELICOPTER ENGINES and THAI AVIATION INDUSTRIES (TAI) have signed an agreement to extend their support to helicopter engines used by the Royal Thai Armed Forces and Thai parapublic operators. This agreement, which follows a previous partnership signed in 2017 for Makila turbines (H225), is based on a Global Support Package (GSP) and now covers around fifty engines.
