The LEAP engine support network is starting to take shape. On 18th September, GE Aviation announced 80 million dollars worth of investment in Malaysia to host engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operations at its GE Engine Services Malaysia (GEESM) centre, based in Subang. This decision was accompanied by the creation of a Global IT Service Desk centre, which will be based in Kuala Lumpur.
This investment means that GEESM will be the first GE Aviation centre to handle LEAP engines MRO for CFM (for which it is a 50% shareholder with Safran Aircraft Engines) outside the United States. It also marks the renewal of the long-term relationship between GE Aviation and Malaysia Aviation Group (the parent company of Malaysia Airlines). GEESM is actually a joint enterprise for which the Malaysian group is a shareholder via its Impeccable Vintage Properties (IVP) subsidiary. An agreement protocol has therefore been signed with the local authorities to extend its lease.
Created in 1997, until now GEESM has concentrated on CFM56 engines MRO. It employs 300 people and works for around forty different airlines.
