Etihad Airways Engineering and Diehl Aerosystems have decided to join forces to design, produce and install the first serial produced 3D-printed cabin plastic part.
This is a pilot project for the production of a cover plate for the economy class IFE system on several aircraft for a Middle Eastern airline.
It could be the starting point for the creation of a series of products. Etihad Airways Engineering will be supported by its Part 21G (design) certification and Diehl by its Part 21G (production) for development, then the German industrial company will support marketing around the world.
Using 3D printing enables a cost saving of around 20 to 30%.
