Ethiopian Airlines is generating a lot of talk on an operational level with its ambitious "Vision 2025". But this development plan doesn't stop there and MRO has always been one of its aspects. The African airline has just provided a stunning reminder of this by inaugurating three new maintenance and painting hangars for wide body aircraft in Addis Ababa, which represented 115 million dollars in investment.
All of the new installations are able to accommodate a 747-8 and were delivered with workshops and a 105 000 m² hangar apron area. Ethiopian is also specifying that the third hangar may accommodate one 777-200 or three 737s at the same time.
" Beyond ensuring self-sufficiency, completion of these maintenance hangars will surely enhance our capability to cope up with the 21st century new aviation developments and offer third party services ", says Tewolde GebreMariam, the group's CEO. Ethiopian already has several airlines amongst its customers, such as ASKY, RwandAir, Congo Airways, Ceiba, CamAir-Co. or Jambojet, to whom it can provide a varied range of services, from inline maintenance to engine, component and structure maintenance, via engineering, calibration, painting or cable bundle manufacturing services.
But this MRO capacity extension also follows on from the growth in its own fleet, which is due to double in size between 2010 and 2025. The fleet is currently made up of 84 aircraft, but Ethiopian is waiting for another four 787s, eleven A350-900s and twenty 737 MAX 8s and is considering new orders for high capacity aircraft.
