Following the agreement protocol finalised last September, in which the project feasibility studies were launched, Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines confirmed their plans to establish a joint venture responsible for the MRO of PW1000G engines (used in the A320 neo and the CSeries and to be used in the MRJ, E-Jets E2 and MC-21). Each of the partners will have a 50% share in the company, which should be established in the second half of 2017.
Representing an investment of 150 million euros, the project is to launch the structure in 2020, providing jobs for over 500 people. It should have the capacity to work on 300 Pratt & Whitney GTFs a year. However, the location of this engine workshop is yet to be determined, as Lufthansa Technik and MTU are looking for "a globally competitive location in or outside Europe."
The maintenance company and engine manufacturer are already involved in the GTF programme, the former belongs to the after-sales service network for the engine range and the latter is involved in its production.
They are also partners in Airfoil Services in Malaysia, a joint venture established in 2003 under the same format of a 50-50 partnership, specialising in the repair of low-pressure turbine and high-pressure compressor airfoils.
